Police Push For Harsher Prostitution Penalties
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — They’re known as “Johns” in the world of prostitution and are known to solicit sexual favors. The Albuquerque Police Department is cracking down and pushing for harsher penalties on these alleged sex-buyers.
Police just busted 12 men in Albuquerque for allegedly soliciting sex during a sting called “Jon Operations.” Police officers said they want to see tougher laws in place so convicted “Johns” don’t get a slap on the wrist.
“It’ll be nice to see that these Johns, if they commit this crime 20 times, it doesn’t stay as a petty misdemeanor every single time,” said one undercover officer.
APD said they want the city council to consider tougher laws like having “Johns” cars booted if they are busted for soliciting sexual acts in their cars.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) – Strip club owners in Albuquerque would have to be licensed and their performers could no longer touch their customers under a proposal being drafted by several city council members.
Councilors Dan Lewis, Debbie O’Malley, and Isaac Benton plan to present the bill next week.
If it passes it would also ban VIP rooms at the strip clubs and they would be required to post signs with a phone number for a human trafficking hotline.
Lewis tells KOB-TV in Albuquerque (http://bit.ly/weJJGT ) that the bill could help curb prostitution and human trafficking. He says outlawing strip clubs in the city isn’t possible but tougher regulations would protect children.
Several strip clubs contacted by the station declined to comment.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — City leaders said Sunday strip clubs in Albuquerque would soon have to apply for a license and face some strict regulations to stay open.
City councilors said they will introduce the new legislation next week.
This legislation is still very young, and council members said they’re still combing through what should be required.
“All other businesses are regulated — they have to get a license. So we’re looking at (strip clubs) again because of our concerns,” Councilwoman Debbie O’Malley said.
Although there are tough zoning limits where a strip club can operate, some council members said it’s time the city starts regulating what happens inside the doors, which is due in part to a rise in human trafficking.

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Albuquerque police want a new weapon in their never-ending effort to stop prostitution on the streets.
If Vice Unit officers have their way, johns won’t only be getting cuffed, their cars will get the boot or seized and sold.
This spring they plan to ask the Albuquerque City Council to propose a law that mirrors DWI laws.
“They’re using their vehicles to conduct criminal activity, so it’s a nuisance,” said an undercover vice officer said as KRQE News 13 accompanied him Friday night. “Not only that, they’re doing the sexual activity in the vehicle often times on people’s private property.”
During Friday afternoon and evening vice officers running a “john sting” along east Central Avenue arrested a dozen men and charged them with patronizing a prostitute. They also arrested three alleged hookers.

Police said the money raised from cars sold at auction would be used to help fight drug addiction and other problems that go hand in hand with prostitution.

Dan Lewis wants tighter restrictions on Albuquerque strip clubs.
Several Albuquerque City Councilors are working on a bill that would add strict regulations to strip clubs.
Councilors Dan Lewis, Debbie O’Malley, and Isaac Benton plan to present the bill to council next week.
If passed, it would mean no more VIP rooms at the strip clubs, no more touching from the customer or the employee and it would require the club owners to apply for a license.
That process would cost a fee and could involve a background check.
And the clubs would also be required to post signs that show a number for a human trafficking hotline.
Councilor Lewis says this could help put an end to prostitution and human trafficking.
“We can’t stop strip clubs in the city of Albuquerque, but we certainly can protect our children and regulate them and protect our children by doing that,” Lewis said.
We tried contacting several local strip clubs for a reaction to the proposed bill.
They declined to comment.

Lots of holiday specials are advertised on that site, especially during Valentines, Christmas and New Years.

Detectives say prostitutes come to Albuquerque during the holidays because johns here are willing to pay more than other cities of similar size.
They say Albuquerque also has a reputation for busting people involved in prostitution.
